In a major step for India’s digital ecosystem, Apple has officially partnered with Reliance Jio to roll out Rich Communication Services (RCS) on iPhones for Jio users. This move, firstly reported by the Economic Times, allows iPhone users on Jio’s network to access advanced messaging features—high-res photos, videos, read receipts, and interactive chats—directly inside the phone’s default messaging app, all at no extra cost.
What is RCS and Why Does It Matter?
RCS, or Rich Communication Services, was first introduced by the GSMA in 2007 as a next-gen upgrade to traditional SMS. Unlike WhatsApp or Telegram, RCS gets natively built into your phone’s SMS app—it’s not “one more app” to install.
Key features include:
- High-resolution photo, video, and audio sharing
- Read receipts and typing indicators
- Group chats, file transfers, and location sharing
- Verified sender for business messages, curbing spam/phishing
- Works over WiFi or mobile data and supports end-to-end encryption
With India’s massive dependence on SMS for OTPs, bank alerts, and transactions, a carrier-backed, iMessage-like experience could be a game-changer as more Indians upgrade to smartphones with next-gen networks.
India: The New Battleground for Messaging
Jio’s 490+ million user base makes it the perfect launch partner. With RCS, Apple aims to deepen its foothold in India’s fast-growing premium smartphone market. Notably, Bharti Airtel has so far declined Google and Apple’s RCS push, citing concerns around spam and privacy, making this Jio-Apple tie-up even more exclusive.
RCS adoption worldwide has grown quickly—with the US and Germany seeing over 75% adoption in just months. Now, with Apple’s support and Jio’s reach, India could see similar rapid growth—if user habits and network support fall into place.

This partnership follows a series of major India-focused moves by Apple:
- Retail Expansion: New flagship Apple stores in Mumbai, Delhi, and upcoming launches in Pune and Bengaluru.
- Manufacturing Shift: Plans to assemble tens of millions of iPhones annually in India by 2026, reducing reliance on China.
- Sales Surge: Apple posted double-digit growth in iPhone, Mac, and services revenue in India last quarter.
RCS integration adds another layer to Apple’s “India-first” strategy, showing how the tech giant is tailoring products and partnerships for Indian users.
Will RCS Challenge WhatsApp in India?
RCS is positioned as a long-term competitor to WhatsApp and other OTT messaging platforms, but several hurdles remain:
- While RCS is built into SMS and could win users who don’t want yet another app, WhatsApp’s ecosystem advantage (payments, communities, business tools) and deep user habits mean the shift won’t be immediate.
- Cross-platform messaging is now possible with iOS (2024 onwards) and Android users benefitting from a seamless experience—no more “green bubble vs. blue bubble” divide.
- Network-level adoption matters; while Jio is on board, other carriers like Airtel are still hesitant, citing spam potential.
The big test for RCS will be business messaging, verified senders, and continued carrier support. If more telcos join in and users grow comfortable with RCS features, WhatsApp could start to feel the pressure—but for now, it’s about incremental change, not instant disruption.
