No Need for China as Ola Electric Develops Fully Made-in-India Ecosystem for EVs, Says Bhavish Aggarwal

Date:

Ola Electric’s founder and CEO, Bhavish Aggarwal, lit up the EV sector with his recent announcement at the company’s landmark Sankalp 2025 event. His message was clear: Ola Electric is not just building electric vehicles—it’s creating a fully vertically integrated EV technology stack conceived, engineered, and produced in India. With this “India Inside” vision, Aggarwal set out his mission to make India a global leader in clean mobility and energy innovation.

What Ola Showcased at Sankalp 2025

Aggarwal’s post highlighted multiple breakthroughs, setting new milestones for the Indian EV ecosystem:

  • India Stack:
  • 4680 Bharat Cell: Ola Electric’s first indigenously developed lithium-ion battery cell. The name “4680” refers to its dimensions—46mm diameter, 80mm height—a format pioneered by Tesla but now manufactured entirely in India. This means higher energy density, faster charging, longer range, better durability, and reduced import dependency.
  • Ferrite Motor: India’s first rare-earth-free motor, using ferrite magnets instead of expensive, supply-chain risky rare-earth magnets. This makes EV motors more affordable and less dependent on imports from countries like China.
  • AI-powered MoveOS 6: Ola’s in-house EV operating system, now AI-integrated. It brings predictive maintenance alerts, adaptive driving modes, smarter navigation, voice commands, and potentially ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems)—making Ola EVs smarter, safer, and more user-friendly.
  • Gen 4 Platform: Ola’s fourth-generation base architecture, modular and scalable for everything from scooters and bikes to drones and humanoids. This shared platform allows for efficient manufacturing and faster innovation across different EV segments.

  • Breakthrough Tech & Platforms:
Ola’s Gen 4 platform is lighter, faster, and can power multi-category vehicles, meaning lower R&D and manufacturing costs while boosting flexibility.

  • Diamondhead—Chasing Singularity:
Ola’s future-forward motorcycle, merging man and machine with advanced engineering and AI. Bhavish Aggarwal announced the Diamondhead would launch in 2027 for under ₹5 lakh.
  • S1 Pro Sport
Adding to Ola’s scooter lineup, the S1 Pro Sport comes with gas-charged rear suspension, retuned front forks, carbon fiber details, and ADAS. Deliveries start January 2026.
  • Roadster X+ 9.1kWh & S1 Pro+ with 4680 Bharat Cell:
These models feature Ola’s indigenously produced battery cells, promising better range and reliability. Available for delivery starting Navratri.

Aggarwal closed by thanking supporters and reaffirming Ola Electric’s mantra: India First.

EV Tech Ecosystem: Competition Heating Up

Ola is not alone in driving India’s EV revolution. Key competitors like Ather Energy and TVS iQube have launched their own breakthroughs:

  • Ather Energy: Recently rolled out its new Ather 450 Apex—the brand’s sportiest and most advanced scooter yet. Ather also expanded its fast-charging grid, introduced custom ride modes, and launched a new, more affordable base model to reach wider markets.

  • Ather’s software updates give riders improved navigation, real-time diagnostics, and voice commands. The company also announced expansion plans targeting over 100 cities by year-end.

  • Other Players: TVS and Hero Electric are scaling up local production, introducing upgraded models, and forming battery and charging collaborations with domestic and international partners.

Together with Ola, these brands push the envelope for Indian EV technology, shaping a robust, innovative ecosystem.

Investor Activity Across the EV Space

  • The Indian EV sector as a whole attracted more than $500mn in funding in 2024, despite tough global markets.
  • Battery tech, software platform upgrades, charging infrastructure, and rural market expansion remain top investment areas.
  • Major international funds are doubling down on Indian EVs, seeing government support, strong consumer adoption, and “Make in India” advantages.

Why Sankalp 2025 Matters

Ola Electric’s “India Inside” approach is a game-changer for the industry—a bold statement that India can build, design, and export the most advanced EVs and energy solutions in the world. With each breakthrough in battery, motor, and AI software, Ola and its rivals put India at the forefront of electric mobility, job creation, and global tech pride.

As demand for clean, connected vehicles surges and India’s supply chain gets stronger, these homegrown innovations signal a new era—making India not just the biggest EV market, but one of its smartest and most self-reliant.
