Reliance and Meta Officially Announce an AI Joint Venture. Where They Will Invest Rs 855 Crore?

Date:

In a strategic leap for India’s artificial intelligence ambitions, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has officially set up Reliance Enterprise Intelligence Limited (REIL), a new entity focused on building and scaling enterprise-grade AI solutions with Meta (Facebook) as its minority partner. The joint venture, announced after months of anticipation and previewed at Reliance’s 48th AGM, affirms RIL’s intention to make AI a core growth engine alongside telecom, retail, and energy—marking a new chapter in the country’s global technology race.

Partnership Structure and Strategic Mission

REIL is incorporated as a joint venture between Reliance Intelligence Ltd (a wholly owned RIL subsidiary) and Meta’s Facebook Overseas Inc, with RIL holding 70% and Meta the remaining 30%. Both have committed an initial investment of ₹855 crore ($97.4 million), aiming for rapid market entry and scaled influence in India and select overseas markets. The venture will be led by Reliance and leverage Meta’s open-source Llama AI models, merging global technical expertise with local enterprise reach.

The official filings make clear that the incorporation does not classify as a related party transaction, and no regulatory approvals were needed for setup—underscoring its speed and strategic intent.

Four Pillars of Reliance’s AI Strategy

At his AGM keynote, Mukesh Ambani delineated REIL’s four-pronged focus:

  1. Building AI Infrastructure: Mega-scale, gigawatt AI-ready data centers in Jamnagar (already under construction) will anchor the initiative. Reliance is partnering with Google Cloud and Nvidia to deploy next-generation chips, renewable-powered data center operations, and sovereign cloud regions for secure AI workloads.
  2. Global Partnerships: Working with tech leaders including Meta, Google, and Nvidia, they aims to create world-class AI products, foundational models, and robust enterprise applications. The JV will democratize access to AI by bridging the prowess of Silicon Valley with India’s digital backbone.
  3. AI Services: REIL will offer platform-as-a-service and pre-configured enterprise AI solutions in critical functions—sales, marketing, IT, customer support, finance—using Meta’s Llama models optimized for affordability, scalability, and Indian context. Solutions will be cloud- and on-premises ready, with hybrid deployments for flexibility and cost control.
  4. Talent Acceleration and Innovation: Reliance Intelligence is designed as a hub for top-tier AI talent, assembling researchers, engineers, and enterprise experts to co-create applied AI for industries as diverse as healthcare, education, agriculture, and manufacturing.

Previous Milestones and Expansion Moves

This partnership builds on Relianc’s rapid trajectory in tech over the past year:

  • AI Infrastructure: In January 2025, Ambani outlined plans for the world’s largest green-powered data center in Jamnagar—set to be AI-optimized with a “gigawatt” footprint and potential for multi-gigawatt scaling.
  • Strategic Allies: They signed partnerships with Google Cloud to create India’s first dedicated AI cloud region and joined forces with Nvidia to integrate advanced chips and run India-language foundational models.
  • Digital Distribution: Tapping Jio’s nationwide fiber and mobile network, REIL aims for mass adoption and easy deployment of AI tools across corporates, SMBs, startups, and public sector bodies.
  • Synergistic Vision: The JV embodies “Jio strategy,” bringing tech breakthroughs and digital access to every Indian, now extended to intelligent platforms and tools that serve practical daily business needs.

Market Impact and National Relevance

By joining hands with Mark Zuckerbarg’s Company and accelerating AI investments, Reliance aims to position India as both a creator and deployer of transformative technologies, not just a consumer. The venture’s long-term goal is “democratizing enterprise-grade AI”—making powerful, affordable tools accessible to millions of Indian businesses, from blue-chip corporations to ambitious SMBs.

Ambani’s vision is clear: With REIL, they are laying the foundation for India’s ascent in the global AI economy, creating an indigenous infrastructure and ecosystem that can support large-scale innovation, iterates fast, and brings new possibilities to the entire digital landscape.

Already, this JV has changed the conversation—setting India on a path to compete in the infrastructure, algorithm, and applied AI race, with the promise of deep, inclusive impact for decades to come.
