Samsung Starts ‘Make in India’ Laptop Production at Greater Noida Factory

Date:

Samsung Electronics has kicked off laptop manufacturing at its Greater Noida plant, further strengthening India’s role as an electronics manufacturing hub. This facility, active since 1996, was already producing feature phones, smartphones, tablets, and wearables. Starting August 2025, laptops—including Galaxy Book models—are now part of its local line-up, marking a significant milestone in Samsung’s support for the “Make in India” initiative.

On Saturday 16th August, the union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw met with Samsung Southwest Asia President and CEO JB Park and Corporate Vice President SP Chun, and noted that “Samsung continues to expand manufacturing of its advanced technology devices in Bharat, driven by talent and innovation.”

Indian Government Schemes Powering Electronics Manufacturing

This move is closely linked with India’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, which rewards companies for expanding domestic production. Launched in 2020, the PLI program for IT hardware and electronics covers products like laptops, tablets, servers, and more. It offers financial incentives for increased output and aims to attract global giants to set up and expand manufacturing in India. Other government schemes include:

  • Semiconductor Mission, supporting chip plants and design ecosystem.
  • SPECS (Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors).
  • Modified Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC 2.0), aiding infrastructure and factories.
These policies have helped bring in major investments and new factories from leading global brands, making India a true electronics powerhouse.

Competitor Moves: Apple, OnePlus, Acer, and More

  • Apple: Increased iPhone assembly in India through local partners like Foxconn and Tata. Apple is now exporting “Made in India” iPhones to global markets and is rumored to be exploring iPad and MacBook production here.
  • OnePlus and BPL: OnePlus has recently partnered with BPL to manufacture tablets in India, using BPL’s legacy facilities and supply chain to enter the local tablet market.
  • Acer: Acer inaugurated a new factory in Puducherry. This is dedicated to making laptops and desktops for the Indian market, part of the company’s strategy to shift more manufacturing from China and Taiwan to India.
Other global electronics brands like Dell, HP, and Lenovo are also scaling up their local production footprints in response to rising demand and government incentives.

Why Samsung’s Laptop Manufacturing Matters

The rapid growth in India’s laptop and PC market—driven by hybrid work, online education, and digital transformation—means huge volumes and new opportunities for manufacturers. By making laptops locally, it can avoid import taxes, reduce product costs, and quickly respond to Indian consumer needs. Experts say this move will encourage even more electronics companies to “Make in India,” generate new jobs, boost local suppliers, and improve logistics and supply chains.

Samsung’s Market Position and India’s Electronics Future

Currently, the Korean giant is India’s second-biggest smartphone player and a top name in tablets, with a 15–27% market share. Entering the laptop segment with local manufacturing will allow it to compete better against rivals and further boost its brand in India.

Samsung’s decision to start laptop manufacturing in India highlights the country’s growing importance as a base for electronics. Supported by government incentive schemes, rising domestic demand, and competitive moves from Apple, OnePlus, BPL, and Acer, India is fast becoming a global leader in electronic device production. This transformation will bring more jobs, investment, and technological skill—signaling a strong future for “Make in India” and attracting even more global giants to the country.
