This 22-Year-Old Founder Hired ChatGPT As CTO: Raised $2 Million For Her AI Startup ‘Lucent’

Date:

Australian AI startup Lucent, founded by 22-year-old Alisa Wu, has successfully secured AU$2 million (approximately US$1.3 million) in an oversubscribed pre-seed round backed by a prominent group of early-stage investors. The funding round was led by Long Journey Ventures and included participation from Horizon Ventures, Browder Capital, Weekend Fund, Firestreak Ventures, along with angel investors such as Sandy Kory, Joshua Browder, and Vedika Jain.

As a solo founder leveraging AI tools—including ChatGPT as her “CTO”—Alisa Wu is on a mission to tackle one of the most critical bottlenecks in generative AI: quality training data for browser-based AI agents that enhance models’ ability to interact effectively with the internet.

The Founder’s Vision and Startup Mission

Alisa Wu brings experience from co-founding MagicBrief, an AI-driven advertising startup acquired by Canva in 2024. Now, through Lucent, she aims to solve a fundamental problem in AI development: the scarcity of specialized, high-quality training data for AI systems designed to operate as browser agents—autonomous software capable of online interactions and task completion.

Lucent’s innovative approach focuses on creating, curating, and delivering niche training datasets curated for frontier AI research labs globally. These datasets help improve AI systems’ contextual understanding and operational accuracy on web-based tasks. The startup positions itself as providing the crucial foundational components needed for the future of intelligent, internet-enabled AI agents.

Use of Funds and Growth Plans

The freshly raised capital will fuel critical growth initiatives, including:

  • Building out Lucent’s proprietary data collection framework optimized for scalable and ethical dataset production.
  • Expanding the technical and operational teams to support accelerated product development.
  • Scaling partnerships with AI labs and research organizations worldwide.
  • Continuing to innovate in AI data design, improving dataset variety, quality, and security compliance.

The funding’s oversubscribed nature reflects strong investor confidence in Lucent’s niche focus and Alisa Wu’s leadership in the AI startup ecosystem. The company’s vision is gaining momentum amid the global surge in demand for AI models that can autonomously navigate and comprehend web content effectively.

Competitive Edge and Market Opportunity

The race to develop more human-like and autonomous AI assistants depends heavily on the availability of finely tuned training data. Unlike broad datasets used by general machine learning algorithms, Lucent’s datasets are tailored explicitly for browser agents—software tasked with understanding, retrieving, and interacting across dynamic online environments.

The niche market opportunity is expansive, overlapping with sectors such as digital assistants, search engines, recommendation platforms, and generative AI models aiming to integrate real-time web knowledge. Lucent’s early mover advantage and focus on personalized, high-quality data position it as a critical enabler in the evolving AI landscape.

Founder’s Unique Approach: AI-Powered Leadership

Alisa Wu’s embrace of AI in operational roles—personally citing ChatGPT as her “CTO”—highlights her forward-looking leadership style. This integration of AI tools into startup governance showcases a new paradigm in founder-driven innovation, where human creativity and artificial intelligence collaborate hand-in-hand from inception to growth
