As food safety concerns grow, the Indian government is gearing up to enforce stricter regulations on dark stores operated by quick commerce giants like Zepto and Blinkit. This move follows recent crackdowns by the Maharashtra FDA, including the suspension of Zepto’s license in Dharavi for unhygienic conditions and action against a Blinkit dark store in Pune for operating without a valid food safety license.
According to sources in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, coordinated inspections are being planned, with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) expected to lead surprise audits across storage facilities and warehouses. With the q-commerce sector poised to hit a $10 billion valuation by 2029, experts believe that rising consumer awareness around hygiene could fundamentally reshape backend operations in the industry.
