India’s remaning 40% Population now can also use Internet with Elon Musk’s Starlink

Date:

Elon Musk-led STARLINK has officially cleared a major regulatory hurdle to enter India’s satellite communication market. As per Reuters, the Indian telecom ministry has granted Starlink a crucial hashtag#GMPCS (Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite) licence, bringing it a step closer to launching satellite-powered internet services in the country.

🛰️ Starlink Becomes Third Licensed Player
With this, Starlink joins the ranks of:
hashtag#OneWeb (by Bharti & Eutelsat).
Jio Satellite Communications.

These three companies now hold the necessary licence to offer satcom services in India — a market that’s poised for explosive growth, especially in rural and underserved regions.

🗂️ What’s Next for Starlink?
While the licence is a big leap, commercial rollout is still pending. Starlink will now have to:
Obtain final approvals from IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre)
Secure spectrum allocation from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT)
Only after these steps can Musk’s space internet venture begin full-scale operations in India.

📡 Why This Matters
India’s internet ecosystem is still grappling with digital divides, especially in hilly, forested, and remote regions.
Starlink’s constellation of 7,000+ Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites (expected to grow beyond 40,000) could bring high-speed internet to the last mile — areas where traditional fiber networks struggle to reach.

India: A Crucial Market for hashtag#Starlink
Starlink had earlier received a Letter of Intent (LoI) from DoT but faced delays due to regulatory uncertainty and competition from local players like Jio.
This licence gives it a clearer runway to finally launch in India — a market where over 600 million people still face inconsistent or no internet access.

STARTUPRO TAKE:
With India pushing for Digital Bharat and global players eyeing space-tech investments, Starlink’s entry could redefine the country’s broadband future. But its real success will depend on affordability, policy clarity, and speed of deployment.
