Bengaluru To Get Second International Airport Soon—Airport Authority of India Is Inspecting 3 Sites.

Date:

Bengaluru is growing rapidly — and so is the number of people travelling in and out of the city. The main airport, Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), is now nearing its full capacity. Currently, KIA handles over 4 crore passengers every year, and this number continues to rise. Even though a second terminal was recently added, it may still not be enough to meet future demand.

Karnataka Government in Action

To avoid future congestion and delays, the Karnataka government is taking proactive steps to plan a second airport for Bengaluru. State Infrastructure Minister M.B. Patil recently visited Delhi to meet Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Ramamohan Naidu and requested speedy approval for the new airport proposal.

Three Sites Under Inspection

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has already surveyed three potential locations for the second airport — two on Kanakapura Road and one on Kunigal Road near Nelamangala. The proposed airport will require approximately 4,500 acres of land. The final site is expected to be selected soon. Once AAI submits its final report, the state will begin land acquisition and project planning immediately.

Why a Second Airport Is Necessary

Often called India’s Silicon Valley, Bengaluru is home to a large number of IT companies, startups, and global enterprises. Every day, thousands of professionals travel to and from the city for work. With air traffic growing at a rapid pace, the current infrastructure may not be able to handle future demand. A second airport will help reduce congestion, minimize delays, and support the city’s continued expansion.

Boost to Jobs and the Local Economy

The new airport is also expected to generate significant employment opportunities. It will lead to the development of hotels, restaurants, transportation services, and retail outlets near the selected site. Additionally, large companies may be encouraged to invest in the surrounding areas, boosting the local economy. Residents around Kanakapura Road and Kunigal Road could benefit from increased job opportunities.

What’s Next?

The government is currently awaiting AAI’s final recommendation. Once that is received, the Karnataka government has promised to begin work without any delay. If everything goes as planned, Bengaluru may soon get its second airport — easing travel and fueling the city’s bright and fast-growing future.
