After being banned for five years, TikTok’s website is now available to users in India. However, the app itself is still not listed on Google Play Store or Apple App Store. TikTok was banned in June 2020 along with 58 other Chinese apps, due to concerns over national security after the border clash at Galwan Valley. At that time, India was TikTok’s biggest overseas market, with over 200 million users.
The First to Popularize Short Videos
TikTok was the first app to make short videos wildly popular worldwide. It built on earlier apps like Vine but became famous for its easy-to-use format and smart content recommendations. After TikTok was blocked, Indian apps like Moj, Josh, Chingari, and MX TakaTak stepped in, while global giants such as Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts quickly grew in India as well.
Improving India-China Ties and App Returns
Recently, India and China have started improving their diplomatic relationship. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to discuss cooperation and peace. This warming of ties helped other banned Chinese apps like Shein, Xender, and TanTan return to Indian app stores.
TikTok’s website becoming accessible might hint at a possible future return, but there is no clear timeline. Many experts believe the app won’t be allowed back fully anytime soon because of concerns about its influence on users and public opinion.

Politics and Digital Trends
This situation shows how politics and technology are connected. While leaders work to build better relations, India’s digital market continues to change fast. Indian short-video apps and global platforms are growing and keeping the space active. TikTok’s role as the pioneer of short videos remains important in shaping how people create and share content today.
