PM Modi Welcomes Anthropic’s Indian Expansion Plan, To Use AI Across Healthcare, Agriculture and Education

Date:

During a meeting in New Delhi, PM Modi welcomed Anthropic’s expansion plans, underscoring India’s commitment to “human-centric and responsible” AI. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei praised India’s vibrant tech ecosystem and highlighted that use of Anthropic’s generative AI coding assistant Claude Code has surged fivefold in the country since June 2025. This engagement between the US-based AI company and the Indian government signals a pivotal moment in India’s rapidly growing role in global AI innovation—particularly as enterprises, startups, and developers increasingly adopt cutting-edge AI solutions across critical sectors.

Anthropic’s Major India Expansion: New Bengaluru Office

Anthropic, backed by Amazon, Google, and other tech powerhouses, is set to open its first Indian office in Bengaluru in early 2026. The move comes as India becomes the company’s second-largest market by usage—after the US—and emerges as a global leader in AI adoption. Anthropic’s Bengaluru office will anchor its Indo-Pacific operations, providing local support for Indian startups, enterprises, and developer communities while also customizing Claude’s AI platform for India’s unique requirements, including regional language support for Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, and more.

Strategically, this expansion will:

  • Hire and invest in local technical talent, reflecting India’s pool of over 900 million internet users and its proactive approach to AI policy.
  • Launch collaborations with Indian partners across sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, and fintech.
  • Boost responsible AI adoption, supporting government priorities for deploying safe, reliable, and inclusive AI in both public and private applications.
  • Develop “local AI models and tools” attuned to India’s massive and diverse user base, including “Indic-language” initiatives.

Why Anthropic Sees India as Critical to AI’s Future

According to Anthropic executives, India’s usage of Claude is distinctive: about 50% of Claude activity in India centers on technical work such as UI design, code debugging, and software development, outpacing the global average of 30%. One-third of conversations on Claude Code in India are initiated by startups, reflecting deep-rooted engagement in the country’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Anthropic is not just expanding as a technology vendor; its regional hub will also:

  • Support the next wave of innovative Indian companies building on Claude and emerging AI agentic workflows.
  • Engage in partnerships for sector-specific deployments in education, healthcare, and agriculture, aiming for social impact at scale.
  • Focus on “responsible AI,” emphasizing both innovation and rigorous safety standards to ensure trust and broad benefit.

India’s Broader Role in AI and Market Dynamics

Anthropic’s investments come amidst intense competition from peer OpenAI and growing interest from India’s own mega-corporates like Reliance, which are seeking AI infrastructure partnerships and co-development deals. India’s expanding developer base, huge domestic market, and government support for AI safety and inclusion all make it a strategic location for global AI firms.

With the new headquarters, Anthropic aims to shape the future of AI in India with a clear focus on:

  • Deep technical collaborations and R&D.
  • Widening access to frontier AI for Indian languages, communities, and enterprises.
  • Building trustworthy, high-performance AI systems for both consumer and enterprise segments.

Summary:
Anthropic’s planned Bengaluru office marks the next stage of its commitment to India—capitalizing on the nation’s dynamic tech talent and positioning India as a centerpiece in the global AI revolution. With surging demand for Claude Code and a multi-sector partnership agenda, Anthropic’s India strategy will accelerate the adoption of responsible, inclusive AI designed to fuel growth and social progress for over a billion people.
