Shantanu Deshpande, Founder of Bombay Shaving Company, has voiced strong concerns about the destruction of protected Aravali land. In a passionate social media post, Deshpande criticized both real estate developers and the Indian government for allowing these valuable lands to be cleared for development.
The Destruction of Aravalis
Deshpande shared his frustration over the clearing of protected lands, which were once full of trees and wildlife. He recalled how this Aravali land was a peaceful haven where he could hear birds chirping and even spot peacocks during the rainy season. Today, however, this area has been bulldozed. The sounds of nature have been replaced by the harsh noise of drilling and hammering.
Impact of Development
Deshpande highlighted DLF Crest, a luxury real estate development located in the same area. Homes in this society, priced at ₹20 crore, were sold with the promise of a serene view of the Aravalis. However, Deshpande pointed out the irony that residents, who paid a premium for this view, now have to endure constant construction noise as deforested lands are developed further. This disruption has led some residents to consider vacating their homes.
Deshpande’s Stand
Deshpande emphasized the hypocrisy of the Indian government, which claims to protect such land for wildlife but continues to allow developers to destroy it. This, according to him, leads to habitat loss, environmental degradation, and worsening air quality. He voiced his anger and helplessness at how profit-driven motives have taken precedence over environmental protection.
As a result, Deshpande made a personal vow to never buy property from developers involved in such activities. Despite the comfort of his current DLF-built rental home, he announced plans to vacate it in two weeks as a protest against the company’s role in environmental harm.
