Why, Putin wants to block or limit Western tech companies like Zoom and Microsoft

Date:

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that foreign technology services such as Microsoft and Zoom should be “throttled” if they act against Russian interests. Emphasizing the need for digital sovereignty, Putin highlighted the importance of developing and adopting domestic software solutions to reduce dependency on foreign technology providers.

This stance aligns with Russia’s broader efforts to assert control over its digital space and promote self-reliance in the technology sector. The Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media, known as Roskomnadzor, plays a central role in monitoring and regulating the country’s media and telecommunications. Roskomnadzor’s responsibilities include supervising compliance with the law, protecting personal data confidentiality, and organizing the work of the radio-frequency service.

In recent years, Russia has taken steps to reduce reliance on foreign technology. For instance, in 2021, reports emerged that Zoom had restricted access to its services for Russian government agencies and state-owned companies, prompting discussions about developing domestic alternatives to such platforms.

These developments underscore hashtag#Russia‘s commitment to enhancing its digital sovereignty and reducing dependence on foreign technology providers.
