Cricketers’ Favourite MPL, Zupee, Probo, and Others Shut Down Real-Money Gaming

Date:

India’s newly enacted Online Gaming Bill 2025 is dramatically has banned the country’s real-money gaming (RMG) ecosystem, prompting shutdowns of major platforms across the sector. The Bill’s comprehensive ban on all online games involving monetary stakes—including fantasy sports, rummy, poker, betting, and opinion trading—has forced industry leaders to halt their RMG operations.

Major Platforms Pull Out of Real-Money Gaming

Several top platforms have already announced shutdowns in compliance with the law:

  • My11Circle (Games24x7) has informed employees internally about its decision to cease RMG activities.
  • MPL (Mobile Premier League) will stop real-money gaming within India but continue its overseas operations, which account for nearly 50% of its revenue, assuring users that withdrawals remain unaffected.
  • Gameskraft discontinued its flagship platform, RummyCulture.
  • Probo has shut both its opinion trading and fantasy cricket platforms to respect the government mandate.
  • Zupee will end real-money gaming but maintain its free-to-play offerings.

Other platforms such as SportsBaazi and MyTeam11 are expected to follow, with the ban’s stringent penalties discouraging any violations.

Industry Impact and Dream11’s Exit

The closing down of RMG operations marks a significant contraction in a sector that previously contributed an estimated ₹27,000 crore in GST revenue and provided employment to thousands. Dream11, India’s largest fantasy sports company, recently announced the shutdown of its RMG business, reinforcing the far-reaching impact of the Online Gaming Bill.

Government’s Justifications and Ministerial Comments

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has defended the Bill, emphasizing its role in protecting vulnerable citizens from addiction, financial ruin, and illegal activities such as money laundering and terror financing linked to unregulated online gaming platforms. The government positions the law as crucial for maintaining India’s security, sovereignty, and public welfare.

Concerns from Industry and Experts

While acknowledging the validity of addiction and fraud concerns, industry voices including entrepreneur Anupam Mittal caution that the ban risks pushing millions toward unregulated black markets valued at an alarming ₹8.3 lakh crore. Additionally, the government stands to lose significant tax revenues, and legitimate users will forfeit legal protections.

The Road Ahead: Pivot to Non-Monetary Gaming and Esports

With real-money gaming outlawed, platforms are rapidly shifting focus to non-monetary games, esports, and overseas expansion. The government’s new regulatory framework includes the creation of a dedicated online gaming authority, aimed at fostering a safer, more transparent gaming environment.
