About ten years ago, a tiny 98-square-foot burger shop opened in India. No one knew that this small outlet would become one of the country’s fastest-growing homegrown burger chains—Burger Singh. Today, Burger Singh boasts over 150 outlets across India and plans to set up many more in smaller cities.
Indian Spices Made It Special
Burger Singh began when founder Kabir Jeet Singh was studying abroad for his MBA. He started blending Indian spices with regular burgers, and people loved the new taste. Because of this, Kabir earned the playful nickname “Burger Singh”—a name that soon became a brand.
Smart Pricing for Indian Students
In 2015, Kabir met angel investor Dheeraj Jain, who enjoyed the menu featuring creations like the “Udta Punjab” burger. The big differentiator, however, was smart pricing. They understood that Indian students wouldn’t pay ₹250 for a burger, unlike what’s common abroad. By keeping prices low yet maintaining quality, Burger Singh quickly became a hit with college students.
Taking on Big Competitors
When Burger Singh launched, heavyweights like McDonald’s and Burger King already dominated the Indian market. But instead of copying them, Burger Singh sold Indian-inspired burgers in buns. This unique approach helped them stand apart from McDonald’s, Burger King, and even KFC.
Taking Indian Burgers to London
Burger Singh’s ambitions didn’t stop in India. In 2017, the chain opened in London, where British customers also fell in love with its Indian flavors. This success abroad demonstrated that Indian burgers could win hearts outside the country. The founders have also announced plans to expand to Dubai and Nepal.
What’s Next for Burger Singh?
Recently, Burger Singh revealed plans to open over 300 stores by 2026. The company is now targeting smaller cities like Lucknow, Jaipur, and Patna. Additionally, they’re launching new menu items featuring local Indian flavors to attract those seeking something different from typical burgers.
Burger Singh’s journey shows how smart pricing, Indian flavors, and a creative menu can outshine global giants. While McDonald’s and Burger King focus on American taste, Burger Singh proudly features Indian twists. The long lines outside its outlets prove that with the right “desi tadka,” even a burger can become a nationwide sensation.
