IIT Madras Launches India’s Lightest Wheelchair at One-Third the Cost of Foreign Brands

The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras has created something very special for people who use wheelchairs. They have launched YD One, India’s lightest active wheelchair, weighing only 8.5kg—almost half the weight of standard wheelchairs.

This new wheelchair was developed by the TTK Centre for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development (R2D2). It is primarily designed for active individuals, such as para-athletes and people with spinal injuries. As a result, people who love being mobile can easily use this wheelchair.

One of the best features of the YD One is its affordable price. It costs less than ₹75,000, which is remarkably inexpensive compared to international wheelchairs of the same category. In fact, foreign brands can be nearly three times more costly. This price advantage allows many people in India to purchase a high-quality wheelchair without excessive spending.

The wheelchair is made of materials that are both strong and lightweight. Its frame features a special rigid mono-tube design, making it easy to carry and highly durable. YD One has undergone extensive testing to ensure it does not break easily and lasts a long time.

YD One has been brought to market by Thryv Mobility, a startup company supported by IIT Madras. This means people can now purchase the wheelchair directly. Thryv Mobility’s mission is to ensure top-quality wheelchairs are manufactured in India and sold at prices people can afford.

Giving Tough Competition to Foreign Brands

Currently, India mostly imports active wheelchairs from foreign brands like Ottobock, Permobil, and Sunrise Medical. These models are expensive, and few people can afford them. However, YD One is set to give these brands tough competition because it is made in India, is more affordable, and more easily available.

India’s Vision for the Future

The IIT Madras team has stated that they will continue developing even better products for people with disabilities. They also plan to export YD One to other countries in the future. This initiative will help India become a leader in creating smart, affordable wheelchairs for everyone who needs them.
