Netflix Lost Over $15 Billion Due to Elon Musk? What is the Controversy

Date:

Elon Musk has once again ignited controversy online, this time by leading the “Cancel Netflix” campaign—calling on his 227 million followers on X (formerly Twitter) to terminate their Netflix subscriptions in protest of what he describes as the streaming platform’s push of “explicit” and “pro-transgender” content aimed at children.

Musk’s campaign sharply escalated after he reposted right-wing account Libs of TikTok’s message, which specifically criticized Netflix’s now-canceled animated kids’ show “Dead End: Paranormal Park” for including a transgender protagonist and carrying a TV-Y7 rating (suitable for children 7 and above).

Following Musk’s urgent calls on X for his followers to cancel their Netflix subscriptions for the “health of your kids,” Netflix’s share price suffered a sharp decline. Over the course of three trading days, this sustained pressure wiped out nearly $17 billion from its market capitalization, plunging it from about $498 billion to approximately $481 billion.

The $15-$17 billion loss figure reported by various sources reflects the cumulative impact of the stock dropping around 4.3% as investors reacted to the backlash against ott giant’s programming choices—particularly shows like “Dead End: Paranormal Park” that featured transgender characters and received criticism from conservative circles heightened by Musk’s amplification.

Musk’s posts went viral, amassing over 53 million views and legitimizing a growing boycott movement that saw thousands of cancellations within days.

People supporting Musk:

Netflix’s Response and Broader Reactions

While Netflix has not issued a specific response to Musk or the campaign, its longstanding culture memo reaffirms that “Representation matters,” acknowledging that while diverse stories and creators may spark debate, the company stands by artists’ rights to creative expression. Netflix maintains that employees are expected to support this diversity even if it sometimes clashes with their personal beliefs; those uncomfortable with the platform’s breadth of content, it states, may not be a good fit for the company.

On the other hand, several public figures—including actor Rob Schneider—have supported Musk’s stance, while others have strongly criticized him for hypocrisy and “cancel culture” despite his self-styled “free speech absolutist” image.
