Microsoft Launches First In-House AI Models, Taking on OpenAI & Google

Microsoft has entered a new era of artificial intelligence with the debut of its first fully in-house models—MAI-Voice-1 and MAI-1-preview—crafted by the Microsoft AI (MAI) team. MAI-Voice-1: Raising the Bar for AI Speech

MAI-Voice-1 is designed for speed and expressiveness. Capable of producing one minute of lifelike audio in under a second—on just a single GPU—it stands out as one of the fastest speech technologies available. The model is already powering features like Copilot Daily for narrated news briefings and Copilot Podcasts, delivering smooth, natural-sounding audio for podcast-style content. Through Copilot Labs, users can also personalize voice styles for interactive uses such as meditation guides or choose-your-own-adventure stories, making AI voices a core part of the next-gen digital experience.

MAI-1-Preview: Microsoft’s First Native Foundation Model

At the same time, Microsoft unveiled MAI-1-preview, its flagship large language model built entirely in-house. Trained on a fleet of around 15,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs, the model demonstrates the company’s ability to achieve powerful performance without relying on huge, resource-heavy infrastructure. MAI-1-preview is crafted with real-world applications in mind—handling instructions and daily tasks well, with live public testing already underway on LMArena. The plan is to integrate this model across Microsoft’s Copilot suite, enhancing every user’s digital assistant experience.
