Adani Group Enters Battery Energy Storage Sector with World’s Largest Single-Site Projects in Gujarat

Date:

The Adani Group has announced a significant entry into the battery energy storage system (BESS) market, unveiling plans to commission a 1126 MW / 3530 MWh capacity BESS facility at Khavda, Gujarat, by March 2026. This will be India’s largest battery storage installation and among the world’s biggest single-site deployments, comprising over 700 containerized lithium-ion battery units. The project is designed to store energy sufficient to deliver 1126 MW power continuously for three hours, playing a vital role in stabilizing the grid, managing peak power demand, reducing transmission congestion, and preventing renewable energy curtailment.

Importance of Battery Energy Storage Systems in the Renewable Era

Battery energy storage systems are critical enablers for integrating intermittent renewable energy sources such as solar and wind into the power grid. They store excess energy generated during high production periods and release it when demand peaks or generation dips, ensuring a reliable power supply around the clock. BESS also enhance grid stability by regulating supply-demand variances and allowing peak shaving, which reduces reliance on fossil fuel-powered peaker plants. Additionally, energy storage facilitates energy arbitrage, backup power, and supports electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Adani’s Strategic Vision and Expansion Plans

Chairman Gautam Adani emphasized that energy storage is foundational to a renewable energy future and India’s energy independence. The Khavda project serves as a cornerstone for India’s clean energy transition, reinforcing the Group’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. Building on this, Adani Group plans to further expand battery storage capacity to 15 GWh by March 2027 and 50 GWh within five years, complementing India’s target of 500 GW renewable capacity by 2030 and achieving round-the-clock clean power.

Current Industry Landscape and Major Players in India

India’s BESS market, valued at approximately USD 3.5 billion in 2025, is growing rapidly, driven by supportive government policies and rising renewable energy projects. Major players in this sector include Exide Industries, Tata Power Solar Systems, Amara Raja Batteries, Luminous Power Technologies, Waaree Energies, Sterling Wilson Renewable Energy, and Reliance New Energy Solar. Many companies are vertically integrating to offer combined renewable generation and storage solutions, further accelerating India’s low-carbon energy infrastructure development.

Conclusion: A Milestone for India’s Clean Energy Transition

Adani Group’s battery energy storage project at Khavda represents a transformative moment in India’s journey toward sustainable and reliable energy systems. This landmark facility will not only bolster grid integrity and renewable utilization but also set new standards for large-scale energy storage globally. As battery technologies mature and deployment scales, India’s clean energy goals are expected to be achieved faster with enhanced energy security, affordability, and climate benefits
