Viral Auto Driver’s ₹8 lakh Monthly Hustle Shut Down By Mumbai Police Amid Security Concerns

Date:

An auto driver in Mumbai’s BKC gained viral fame after a LinkedIn post claimed he was earning ₹5-8 lakh per month—not by ferrying passengers, but by offering a “bag-keeping service” to US visa applicants for ₹1,000 each.

This enterprising driver turned his rickshaw into a “locker on wheels” near the US Consulate in Bandra Kurla Complex, where personal belongings are not allowed inside. His service quickly became popular, and soon, more than a dozen other unofficial operators joined in, providing similar services.

However, this viral hustle story took a turn when the Mumbai Police intervened. Authorities cited security violations and illegal operations for the crackdown, summoning the original auto driver and 12 others for questioning. The police confirmed that such “locker services” have no legal backing and that parking near the consulate is restricted for safety reasons.

A senior officer stated, “The driver has a license to transport passengers, not store bags. Any mishandling of belongings can lead to a serious security threat.”

While the entrepreneurial side of the hustle garnered mixed reactions online—some admiring the driver’s creativity and others raising legal concerns—the police action has put an end to this viral bag business.
